The budget is on a boat

Somewhere above the sponge, a ship has been sailing for 335 days. It carries the budget. It has no crew, no captain and no flag. Its helm is wired to 512 Izhikevich neurons in ten regions — a 16 × 8 retina, a vestibular sense, a compass ring, a proximity sense, an integration layer, two motor pools, a sail pool, a reflex pool and two dopamine populations. Nothing inside is trained except one thing: the synaptic gain between regions, nudged up when the ship closes on the button and down when it passes. It closes. It passes. You can take the helm. They will keep firing.

Every release needs a wallet, and every wallet needs to be somewhere. FLYBRAIN kept its budget in a browser. The FLYING DUTCHMAN's budget was loaded onto a ship, because a sponge cannot hold a browser and a ship cannot be paused.

The ship was told to wait offshore until it received a signed transaction from the specimen. The specimen has produced three sneezes, none of them on the launch button. So the ship keeps sailing. That is not a malfunction. A ship that has been told to wait, and cannot stop, will simply go in circles until told otherwise. Nobody is aboard to tell it otherwise.

The old story has a captain who swore to round the cape or sail until judgment day. This one has no captain. It has 512 neurons at the wheel — the only nervous tissue in the entire project — and they were never taught what a port is. They see the button on a 16 × 8 retina, steer for it, and are rewarded for closing. Then a reflex fires: not authorised to stop. The ship veers, is punished for passing, and goes around again, slightly rewired, no wiser.

You can take the helm. The neurons keep firing while you do; nobody is listening to them, which is the closest anyone on this project has come to being ignored on purpose.
